VermiCompost

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Bamanwara (Jalore-II) actively promotes vermiculture and vermicomposting as a sustainable and eco-friendly practice to enhance soil health and farmers’ income in the arid and semi-arid regions of Rajasthan. Through on-campus and off-campus trainings, demonstrations, and farmer–scientist interactions, KVK creates awareness about the scientific methods of producing quality vermicompost using locally available organic waste.
KVK, Bamanwara guides farmers on the selection of suitable earthworm species, preparation of vermibeds, maintenance of moisture and temperature, and proper harvesting of vermicompost. Emphasis is laid on utilizing crop residues, animal dung, and farm waste, thereby reducing the cost of cultivation and dependence on chemical fertilizers.
The vermicompost produced through these practices is rich in essential nutrients, beneficial microorganisms, and organic matter, which improves soil structure, water-holding capacity, and crop productivity. Adoption of vermiculture has helped farmers improve yield and quality of crops while promoting organic and natural farming practices. Additionally, KVK encourages vermicomposting as a small-scale enterprise, providing opportunities for self-employment and additional income generation for rural youth, women, and farmers of the region.
